Meeting Textiles, Meeting Myself
Updated: Jun 19
It all began with Aunt Jane's old Singer sewing machine and a half-acre vegetable garden tucked behind the orchard. On sunny Saturday mornings, I helped tend the garden, and in the afternoon, she would load me into the car, and we would set off on an adventure.
As the miles passed and we drew closer to our destination, our conversations turned to animated discussions of the day's mission. J.C. Penney, Montgomery Ward, Sears, and even F. W. Woolworth all had fabric and sewing notion departments, but the most magical of them all was Kaplan's Fabrics on the Country Club Plaza.
Wherever we landed, we wandered among rows of colorful textiles and flipped through the oversized pages of the old pattern catalogues, admiring the styles and dreaming of endless possibilities and ways of bringing together every available element.
On Sundays, after lunch and the completion of my latest sewing project, I climbed into the welcoming branches of my favorite apple tree to see what I could see and amble through my daydreams.
Those early experiences nurtured a lifelong love of nature, craftsmanship, and creative expression. They taught me the joy of making something beautiful and meaningful with my own hands.
PrairieFolkStudio is still in its early seasons of growth, and I hope you'll follow along and visit my Spoonflower design shop often to see what's new. My wish is that these designs spark your imagination, inspire your creativity, and bring a little beauty and joy to the projects you create.
